Unicorn Meadow

The legend of the unicorn has always been considered fantasy and myth, although some say that it is based in fact. I have heard the disappearance of the unicorn explained in the song, The Unicorn (see below). It said that while the other animals were filing two-by-two onto Noah's ark, the unicorns were playing and missed the boat. I don't know whether the unicorn is real or not and I don't believe that it really matters. The unicorn as a mythological creature is beautiful and what it stands for is even more beautiful. It is purity and innocence; bravery and courage and courage; and magical and fantasy. The unicorn is a beautiful creation and that is why I collect them, love them, and dedicate my nickname and pages to them.

Below you will find a copy of The Unicorn Song, two songs from The Last Unicorn, and poems written by a couple of my friends.

THE UNICORN
A long time ago when the earth was green,
There were more kinds of animals than you'd ever seen.
They'd run around free when the ark was bring born,
But the loveliest of them all was the Unicorn.

CHORUS:
There was green alligators and long-necked geese,
Some humpty-backed camels and some chimpanzees,
Some cats and rats and elephants,
But sure as you're born
The loveliest of them all was the Unicorn.

Now God seen some sinning and it gave him pain.
And he says, "Stand back, I'm gonna make it rain."
He says, "Hey Brother Noah, I'll tell you what to do,
Build me a floating zoo."

CHORUS:
And take some of them green alligators and long-necked geese,
Some humpty-backed camels and some chimpanzees,
Some cats and rats and elephants,
But sure as you're born,
Don't you forget my Unicorn.

Old Noah was there to answer the call.
He finished up making the ark just as the rain started falling.
He marched in the animals, two by two
And he called out as they went through.

CHORUS:
Hey Lord, I got your green alligators and long-necked geese,
Some humpty-backed camels and some chimpanzees,
Some cats and rats and elephants,
But Lord, I'm so forlorn,
I just can't see no Unicorns.

Then, Noah looked out through the driving rain,
Them Unicorns were hiding, playing silly games,
Kicking and splashing while the rain was pouring.
Oh, them silly Unicorns.

CHORUS:
There were green alligators and long-necked geese,
Some humpty-backed camels and some chimpanzees,
Noah cried, :Close the door cause the rain is pouring,
And we just can't wait for no Unicorns

The ark started moving, it drifted with the tides.
Them Unicorns looked up from their rocks and they cried,
And the waters came down and sort of floated them away.
And, that's why you've never seen a Unicorn to this very day.

CHORUS:
You'll see green alligators and long-necked geese,
Some humpty-backed camels and some chimpanzees,
Some cats and rats and elephants,
But sure as you're born, you'll never gonna see no Unicorn.

THE UNICORN POEM
© J.A. Storey-Taylor 1989

Be still, lonely heart,
The time of joining
Draws ever closer

Wait with quietude
In the verdure
And the Unicorn
Will appear,
To lay his weary head
On virgin breast

Sweet heart, dear heart,
Have no fear for the beast,
For the Hunter will bring no harm

Where love alights
With truth and trust,
There forms a charmed circle
Those kissed by lust or greed
Are powerless to enter
Turning their backs to the light

But those without fear
Are One with Love
And made most gladly welcome.

Chance Meeting
By Emma Obata
6-9-01

Once there lived two unicorns
As happy as can be.
One lived in the desert,
And the other in the sea.

One beast was the color
Of careless sea foam.
She reflected the white-caps
Of her watery home. The other had a mane
Like the shifting sands.
He blended to the dust storms
Of his powdery land.

One day the two did chance to meet
In a forest wide
And at the sight they stopped and fell
Onto their knees and cried.

Never before in this wide world
Had they known someone like they.
And now that they had found their one
They knew that they must stay.

When out rang a voice so sweet
They knew they must go see.
This song, this sound, they’d never heard,
The maiden by the tree.

They did not hear the footsteps fall,
So mesmerized were they
They did not hear the battle cry
They could not run away.

And then white fur was stained with red;
The sword that broke the trance.
And nevermore will humans know
The unicorn’s blessed dance.

Unicorn

The hunter stood beside me
Who blew that mighty horn.
I saw that he was hunting
The gentle unicorn.

But the unicorn is noble
He knows his gentle birth
He knows that God has chose him above
All beast on Earth.
He's placed on a ledge that climbs.

The ledge that climbs high in the sky.
It sparkles and shimmers a gleam so wide
The unicorns roam and rare-up high
They are God's special creatures
And live a righteous life.

For they fear no man and scorn their dart.
And only a virgin's magic power shall tame their haughtly heart.

Spirit of the Wind

The Unicorn is wrongly named
A description will tell why.
Silver hooves upon the ground
Wing tips brush the sky.

The sight of his eyes
Is quite unusual and rare.
They give off the feelings
Of warmth, love, and care.

The mane is melted gold
A flame against the blue
Matched only by his tail
Which is the same fiery hue.

The horn is the most
Mystical of all
Rainbow it is colored
Magic is its call.

Gentle is his nature
Never has he sinned.
As everyone can see
He's the Spirit of the Wind.

To post this poem here wouldn't do justice to the work the poet has done in presenting her material,
so instead I will post a link to her poem on her site.

Unicorn Dance
by Maralyn Cook

THE LAST UNICORN

When the last eagle flies over last, crumbling mountain,
And the last lion roars, at the last, dusty fountain,
In the shadow of the forest, though she may be old and worn,
They will stare, unbelieving, at the Last Unicorn.

When the first breath of winter, through the flowers is icing,
And you look to the north, and the pale moon is rising,
And it seems like all is dying and would leave the world to mourn
In the distance, hear the laughter of the Last Unicorn,

I'm alive...I'm alive...

When the last moon is cast over the last star of morning,
And the future has past without even a last, desperate warning,
Then look into the sky where through the clouds a path is formed
Look and see her, how she sparkled, it's the Last Unicorn,

I'm alive...I'm alive...

WHERE DO UNICORNS GO?

In the sea, the fish have learned to fly,
On a moonlit night, on wings of silver,
As the enchanted stars sail serenely by.
Do they know?
Where do unicorns go? Where winged horses fly?
Narwhals lost at sea, and never seen again.
Go, go and ask the magpie,
"Where do unicorns go?"

In the trees, the birds have learned to speak,
Many colored, they keep their secrets,
In a parade of clouds, playing hide and seek,
Do they know?
Where do unicorns go? Where winged horses fly?
Narwhals lost at sea, and never seen again.
Does myth and mystery lie,
Where the unicorns go?...

THE PROPHECY OF THE TRUE HORN

Into darkness will I fade,
Into a night that Man has made,
But through that gloom shall gleam the Sun
When I am lost, and again am won.

Release! Release! I call to thee
In the New Lands across the sea;
Let another, on narrow pathways, come to me.

Furthest and Highest,
Yet not beyond reach.
Choose thou well a path that will teach
How the Sunken is raised
And Emptiness filled
And a wandering heart
Can finally be stilled.

Seek the Great Stone! Mark it well, with a sign,
That the one who shall follow
Shall see it is mine,
And, seeing, shall ponder and certainly know
As the Ancients have writ: "As Above, so Below."

And I shall guard the Source of Greatness;
Waiting by a teardrop
>From neither joy nor sorrow born,
In silver bound, beneath the ground,
I am the Spiral Horn.
