NEXT MEETING SATURDAY JUNE 8, 2002

Program:
June's Speakers will be Jim Cline, CTO and Vice-President and Carol Woods, Senior Editor of Timberwolf Press.  Their topic will be Writing Exciting with Q&A afterwards.

Timberwolf Press was founded in 1999 by Internet Pioneer Patrick Seaman. It is a unique multimedia company that is working to help reinvent the publishing industry by going beyond traditional boundaries in creating and employing new media innovations in print audio, Internet broadcasting, and video opportunities.  When acquiring the rights to a book, Timberwolf acquires all the rights to its titles and seeks to fully develop them in all media forms.  The company believes that successes in one media help build the other media, increasing the overall lifetime and potential of a title.

Timberwolf prefers works in a contemporary or future setting, including:

"Hard core:"
Science Fiction, preferably hard or military but open to others
Extraordinary Fantasy
Mystery-Suspense
Techno-Thrillers
Espionage/Spy Thrillers (post cold-war: Think China, India/Pakistan and other flash-points)
Military Historical Fiction

Although they will not accept any submissions at the meeting, you are encouraged to submit.  They accept e-mail submissions of completed manuscripts only.  Send the following to: submissions@timberwolfpress.com.

An email query letter. Query letters should be brief and to the point. If you cannot summarize your work in one page, you need to spend more time refining your query letter.

A synopsis. The synopsis should describe the book at a "strategic" level. It should provide an overview of the story-line, along with a sense of who your characters are and their motivations.

An outline. This is a "Joe-Friday" outline. Just the facts. No prose allowed. If it takes the author more than an hour to write the outline, then something is wrong. The outline will help Timberwolf evaluate the pacing of the story, since we will write a script based on it for the Audio Theatre adaption.

Optional: Character sketches. A character sketch is generally a one page description of each of your *major* characters that should read likea dossier.

May's Meeting ReCap:

Courtney Dreslin of the DHS Literary agency spoke on what her agency does for their authors. She also invited the members of the DWL to submit a one-page summary of their project along with the first 50 pages directly to her.

DHS has a working relationship with their editors and knows what they are looking for so they are able to read a work and know immediately if they can place it. An agent is part salesman and part negotiator in that they have to sell the author's work to the publisher and try to work out the best contract possible for them. DHS will help with publicity (ie: booking on talk shows, radio shows, etc.). They charge a 15% agent's fee per project and a contract can be terminated at any time. If a foreign publisher wishes to publish an author's work, then DHS and the Foreign agent will split a 20% commission. The author is never charged more than 20%. There is a 4 to 6 week response period for any project submitted.

She gave this warning: If an agent charges a reading fee, you should not submit to that agent. No reputable agent will charge a fee to read an author's work.

The books of JONI LATHAM and MARY S. MCGUIRE (Francis Henk) are in the Denton Public Library, as are some of FLORENCE MCCLAIN's works.

JULY TOPIC: NEW SLATE OF OFFICERS.  The 2001-2002 officer team is stepping down.  The membership must come forth with a new officer team.  Nominations in the July meeting; come prepared to volunteer for office to keep this valuable organization running.
