NOVEMBER MEETING RECAP
Barbara Youngblood Carr made us laugh and made us think through her poetry.
Barbara is of Native American Heritage and has traveled extensively. Both
are reflected in her poetry. The subjects of her poetry range from a
cockroach bored to death by a sermon to a tribute to America's military heroes.
Due to her many poems and prose in support of American values and military
service since the Revolutionary War, she was awarded the title of National Poet
Laureate for the Military Order of the Purple Heart in April 2005. This
honor has been extended to 2006. To help enrich our young people and foster their creative abilities, she shares expertise in poetry and prose with young people through workshops in
middle school and other outreach programs. Her biggest piece of advice to
writing is pay attention to everything around you. There are stories and
poems everywhere. In something a friend or stranger does or says. A dog
walking across a street or a dead cockroach in a church. Speaking of, did
you know there is was a Cockroach museum in Plano? Here's the website
for anyone who wants to check it out.
http://www.pestshop.com/cockroac.html . Barbara is the editor for A GALAXY OF VERSE, a collection of poetry, which is
published twice a year. Anyone who pays the $15 membership fee to Poetry
Society of Texas is included in the publication. If you're interested,
please contact Barbara at
bcarr2@austin.rr.com . MEMBER NEWS Jim Matheson's new novel, SHE RODE DINOSAURS, is available. Ten-year
old Kaye Tew thought she would be spending a quiet Spring Break at her Grandma
and Grandpa Tew's Utah home reading books about horses and dinosaurs.
Little did the red-haired tomboy know how a horrific accident at a nearby
top-secret scientific facility would change her life...and rewrite natural
history. Contact Jim for a copy of his exciting new novel. Keri Fry's new novel, WATCHING OVER LILY, is available. There are
things she cannot forget and wounds that have not healed from a tragedy that
turned her world upside down. Jacob is used to protecting little girls and
now he protects Lily from an unknown evil. His past is unknowingly tied to
hers. Only those who sent him know how. Once his assignment is
completed, Jacob knows he will have to leave. Will he risk whatever the
consequences are to stay with Lily? Contact Keri
for a copy of her new paranormal novel. On-Line Writers resources
